INDIANAPOLIS - BMW Constructors Inc., an Indianapolis-based company, was recognized by Commissioner of Labor Nancy J. Guyott of the Indiana Department of Labor as the first Indiana construction contractor site to be awarded the VPP STAR-level safety award.

The U. S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) created the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) in 1982 to recognize and promote effective worksite-based safety and health management systems. Approval into VPP is OSHA's official recognition of the outstanding efforts of employers and employees who have achieved exemplary occupational safety and health.

Commissioner Guyott presented a flag and a certificate during an award ceremony and luncheon to celebrate the occasion. The presentation recognized a partnership for safety and health between BMW Constructors, the Indiana Department of Labor, and local unions - Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union 440, U.A.; Laborers International Union of North America State Of Indiana District Council, Local 120; Indiana Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights, Local 60 and Local 1003; and International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Iron Workers, Local Union 22.
