Glendale Water & Power (GWP) in California teamed up with the San Gabriel Habitat for Humanity to provide photovoltaic systems for three homes. A 1-kW system was installed at each home, and the utility estimates the system will generate approximately 50 percent of each home's electrical needs. In addition to solar panels, the utility also provided funding to help make the houses more energy efficient by installing whole-house fans; dual-pane, low-E argon gas-filled windows; high-efficiency heating; Energy Star® appliances; and increased insulation levels. GWP plans to assist with eight more homes in the Glendale area over the next two years. Through funding, the utility will provide 1.5-kW systems and other energy-efficient enhancements.
