EPA Investigates Sanitizers in Ducts

ARLINGTON, VA — According to the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Antimicrobials Division expressed concern at a recent association staff meeting about using certain disinfectants and sanitizers in nonporous systems. This includes hvac duct systems.

The EPA believes that some product labels may not give specific instructions on the use of these products on nonporous surfaces. The agency also says that only a few products have been labeled for use in hvac systems.

ACCA says that EPA officials are planning to send a letter to product manufacturers asking them to test their products for efficiency and safety when used in an hvacr system. The manufacturer results will then be submitted back to the EPA. Approved products will be listed on the EPA website when they are available.
