Enron Requested Loan Help From Federal Government
WASHINGTON, DC — The Bush administration has admitted that Enron Corp.’s president made a number of phone calls to senior officials in the U.S. Treasury Department in the fall to try to get their help in establishing loans to enable the energy trading company to avoid bankruptcy.
Greg Whalley, the president of Enron, was said to have requested that an under secretary of the Treasury call the firm’s banks. A spokeswoman said that no calls were made and the administration did not get involved in the matter.
