WASHINGTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a proposed draft revision (Version 2.1) to the Energy Star program requirements for gas and oil fired furnaces.

The second phase of this specification, Tier II, is proposed to commence on Oct. 1, 2008. All products, including models originally qualified under Tier I, with a date of manufacture on or after Oct. 1, 2008, must meet the Tier II requirements in order to qualify for Energy Star. Tier II requirements mandate that gas furnace models have a 92 percent AFUE rating, oil furnace models have a 85 percent AFUE rating, and all must include a manufacturer limited warranty.

The EPA is also considering including furnace fan efficiency requirements for both gas and oil furnaces. This has been put on hold due to issues regarding test procedures and may be revisited in future versions of the specifications.

Natural Resources Canada has informed the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) that it agrees with EPA’s proposal to increase the efficiency levels.
