According to supplier Calmac Manufacturing Corp. (Englewood, NJ), Thermal Energy Storage (TES) has been included in one of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Federal Technology Alerts that provide information on energy-efficient technologies to federal energy and facility managers. The document describes TES as a technology for reducing on-peak electricity demand and cost.

The alert notes that TES differs from traditional space cooling systems because it does not rely on electric chillers operating during peak demand periods when electricity rates are higher. Instead, chillers are used during off-peak periods, when rates are lower, to store ice or chilled water in insulated tanks for use the next day.
