DOE Honors Energy Reduction Efforts

WASHINGTON, DC — Nine organizations and two individuals were honored by the Department of Energy (DOE) for implementing significant energy-efficiency improvements at federal facilities around the country.

According to the DOE, the efforts of those recognized helped to reduce energy consumption in DOE buildings in fiscal year 2000 by more than 40% in Btu per gross square foot, exceeding the federal government’s energy goals.

The 2001 DOE Energy Management Award recipients were:

  • Organizations — Pacific North-west National Laboratory (Richland, WA); Fermilab (Argonne, IL);
  • Outstanding Individual Effort — Steve Greenberg, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Livermore, CA);
  • Small Groups — Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (Livermore, CA) Building 482 Retrofit Team and Emergency Electrical Load Curtailment Plan Team; Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley, CA) Sitewide Water Efficiency Retrofits in Restrooms Team; Sandia National Laboratories (Albuquerque, NM) Chilled Water Thermal Energy Storage System Team; Savannah River Site (Aiken, SC) ESPC Task One Team; and Fermilab (Batavia, IL) CHL Liquid Nitrogen Recovery Retrofit Team;
  • Energy Champions — Michael Shincovich, U.S. Department of Energy (Washington, DC); and Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (Idaho Falls, ID).
