Desiccant Rotor Tops Additions to Munters' Line

ATLANTA, GA — Munters Corp., which manufactures dehumidification systems for the industrial market, was on hand at this year’s Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigerating Expo to display a series of new developments.

The company has a number of new products, including an evaporative cooling system, a fogging system, and a rotor for desiccant dehumidification systems.

Munters says its new GTR rotor can improve system performance by up to 60%.

New Rotor

The company’s new GTR rotor will be available in newly manufactured Munters dehumidifiers. The company says that the new rotor will improve system performance by as much as 60%

According to Mike McDonald, Munters president, this new wheel is more compact and allows for greater energy efficiency. Also, the reduction in size allows for the wheel to be reactivated with less energy and the new wheels will have a smaller footprint.

The company also says that the new rotors are thus far very effective in their new systems and can be built without precooling. This allows engineers to specify a system with no standing water concern.

Further benefits include stability. The desiccant does not undergo chemical or physical changes during the absorption, the company says. This makes it possible to wash the GTR rotor.

Applications for the new GTR rotor will be in the food, pharmaceutical, and air markets, to name a few.

The GTR rotor was introduced just last year and will only be included in Munters Modular Dehumidification Systems and Integrated Dehumidification Systems using the MDS and IDS brand names.

Dehumidification Systems

The company has also developed two new dehumidification systems that will allow for better and more efficient cooling. This can be done through a new evaporative system or the company’s new fogging system.

The Munters System Division unveiled the Turbidek evaporative cooling system. It was developed in order to improve thermal efficiency and increase output levels. The system works by increasing the output of cooler and denser air, and allows a gas turbine to have a higher mass flow rate and pressure ratio. This, then, results in an increase in power output.

Also, the evaporative cooling system increases oxygen levels and decreases the amount of nitrogen oxides and other airborne contaminants, the company says.

The company also reports that the Turbidek system, at an ambient temperature of 38°C and 30% rh, can possibly achieve a power increase of 11% to 24% just by cooling the intake air.

The System Division has also developed the Turbofog fogging system for turbine users and operators. This product was developed to increase output levels and improve thermal efficiency of gas turbines.

Like the Turbidek System, the Turbofog works by lowering the temperature of the inlet air and provides the turbine with denser and cooler air. This again translates into an increased power output and a reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions.

Turbofog uses a series of pumps and nozzles to atomize water into small droplets and distribute them in the inlet airstream, where they rapidly evaporate and cool the air.

Another benefit of the Turbofog is its reduced size. The system can be mounted directly onto existing inlet houses without having to expand them.

Munters announced that it also developed a Turbocool software program, which outlines the benefits of evaporative cooling. This includes economic as well as power capacity advantages.
