Dec. 1, 2004: NEMA Premium Motor Shipments Increase

ROSSLYN, Va. - The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recently released state-level shipment data on its NEMA Premium® motor program, which shows a significant increase in each of the six reported categories. The data indicate that in 2001–2002 the total net units shipped went up approximately 30 percent. In 2002–2003 there was a 14 percent increase over the previous years.

The NEMA Premium® Energy Efficient Motors Program, established by member companies of the NEMA Motor and Generator Section, provides premium efficient products that meet the needs and applications of users and original equipment manufacturers based on a consensus definition of "premium efficiency." NEMA Premium efficiency may be applied to general purpose as well as definite and special purpose products from 1-500 horsepower operating on low or medium voltage power.

NEMA recently presented the results of its motor shipment research at a meeting with the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE). NEMA, CEE, and an array of sponsors demonstrated the growing strength of the Motor Decisions Matter campaign, which promotes system efficiency by encouraging industrial and commercial customers to evaluate their motor repair and replacement options, and to develop a motor management plan before motors fail.

"This latest data is a progress report on how well the motor industry is doing to transition motor users to the more efficient motors," said Rob Boteler, chairman of NEMA's Motor and Generator Section. "Premium efficient motors can dramatically cut energy costs, increase productivity, and conserve energy. This just makes sense, particularly in light of the nation's energy crunch."

"The NEMA Premium program provides a unique benefit to our members, the electroindustry, and consumers by promoting energy efficient technologies that save money and improve system reliability," said NEMA President Malcolm O'Hagan. "The latest data are a testament to the significance and success of the program."
