For a number of years, advocates of chiller change-outs away from CFCs have bemoaned the slow pace of the process in the United States. And it appears that the same situation exists in Canada as well.

In mid-October, the Heating, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) released the first update on the Canadian CFC chiller stock.

The study estimated that about 160 chillers previously operating on CFC refrigerants were converted or replaced during the year 2000 in Canada. This brought the total number of converted or replaced chillers from 799 to 938 and the rate of conversion/replacement up to 17.1%. It is estimated that there are 5,486 CFC chillers in Canada.

Looking at CFC chillers over the past few years, there have been 684 conversions from 1996 to 2000 and 254 replacements.
