Canadian Chiller Bookings Increase In The Third Quarter

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario - During the third quarter of 2003, chiller bookings increased for the first time for the year, ahead by 31 percent over the same period of 2002. Unit heater shipments were close behind, posting a 25 percent increase, followed by commercial air conditioning shipments at 4 percent.

Residential air conditioning numbers fell by 37 percent for the quarter, and residential furnaces by 5 percent.

Year-to-date, unit heater shipments showed the greatest increase at 29 percent, residential air conditioning increased 4 percent, and residential furnaces 1 percent. Due to low numbers in the first and second quarters, chiller bookings were down 15 percent as of the end of the third quarter; commercial air conditioning changed very little, less than 1 percent.

Key figures and trends are as follows:

Commercial air conditioning shipments increased by 4 percent, from 11,477 in the third quarter of 2002 to 11,920 in the third quarter of 2003. Year-to-date shipments decreased by less than 1 percent, from 29,572 for the third quarter 2002 to 29,543 for the third quarter 2003.

Residential air conditioning shipments decreased 37 percent from 85,963 in the third quarter of 2002 to 54,138 in the third quarter of 2003. Year-to-date shipments increased by 4 percent, from 247,121 for the third quarter 2002 to 257,862 for the third quarter 2003.

Residential furnace shipments decreased 5 percent from 88,356 in the third quarter of 2002 to 83,810 in the third quarter of 2003. Year-to-date shipments increased by 1 percent, from 194,178 for the third quarter 2002 to 196,934 for the third quarter 2003.

Unit heater shipments increased by 25 percent from 6,869 in the third quarter of 2002 to 8,574 in the third quarter of 2003. Year-to-date shipments increased by 29 percent, from 16,623 for the third quarter 2002 to 21,481 for the third quarter 2003.

Chiller bookings increased by 31 percent from 121 units in the third quarter of 2002 to 158 in the third quarter of 2003. Year-to-date shipments decreased by 15 percent, from 549 for the third quarter 2002 to 469 for the third quarter 2003.
