Aug. 24, 2005: DOE To Issue Guidelines To Customs Service On 13 SEER

ARLINGTON, Va. - In an effort to clear up confusion regarding implementation of the new 13 SEER rule with respect to imported products, the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) has received confirmation from the U.S Department of Energy that the department will be notifying the U.S. Customs Service that residential central air-conditioners and heat pumps manufactured prior to January 23, 2006 with a SEER rating of less than 13 will not be allowed to be imported into the U.S. after January 23, 2006.

Products manufactured in the U.S. or imported into the U.S. prior to January 23, 2006, with a SEER rating of less than 13 can be sold and installed anywhere in the U.S. after January 23, 2006, while supplies last. The 13 SEER minimum efficiency standard applies to products manufactured or imported after January 23, 2006.
