TRENTON, N.J. - New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine is moving forward with public meetings on his Energy Master Plan, a framework for the state’s long-term energy strategy. The plan supports passage of legislation (AB 1763 and SB 1253) requiring all residential furnaces sold in the state to have a minimum 90 percent AFUE efficiency.

The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) notes that this proposed state standard of 90 percent AFUE efficiency is higher than the 80 percent AFUE federal standard set to take effect in 2012 and thus contrary to federal law. AHRI has presented opposition testimony to both bills through the legislative process and is currently working to remove the language relative to residential furnaces.
