MADISON, Wis. - Aprilaire, working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced a voluntary recall of Aprilaire Model 5000 electronic air cleaners.

The company has determined that the plastic inner housing and chipboard edge in the filter media of the Model 5000 may pose a fire hazard. According to the CPSC, parent company Research Products Corp. has received six reports of fires. No injuries were reported.

People who own an installed Model 5000 should immediately unplug or shut off the unit. They can contact Research Products Corp. at 888-742-2401 to receive a free repair kit containing the flame-retardant inner housing and filter. Aprilaire stated that the kit could be installed by the homeowner within 25 minutes.
