'Heat's-On' Program Enters 15th Year

ST. LOUIS, MO — The Mechanical Contractors Association (MCA) of Eastern Missouri, Inc., and Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local Union 562, have again provided heating system inspections for hundreds of disabled and needy homeowners in the St. Louis area this fall for the 15th annual “Heat’s-On” program.

The two organizations donated time, resources, and materials valued at approximately $100 per house during this year’s program, which was conducted Oct. 13, 2001. The 34-point inspection included cleaning boilers, water heaters, and furnaces. United Refrigeration donated filters and Home Services provided batteries to be installed where needed.

“Our goal this year was to reach approximately 600 homes,” said Hanford Gross, president of the Eastern Missouri MCA.

Eligible recipients were identified by the City of St. Louis Agency on Aging — Department of Human Services; Energy Care, Inc.; Home Services; and the St. Louis County Department of Human Services.

“It’s great to be able to give our talents and resources to such a worthy cause,” said James E. O’Mara, business manager for Local 562.

The St. Louis Heat’s-On program is part of a nationwide effort. Last year, heating equipment in more than 3,000 homes in 31 U.S. cities were serviced or repaired by more than 2,000 volunteer servicemen and nearly 600 mechanical contractors. Heating equipment, repairs, and service costs valued at approximately $1.5 million were provided.
