Society awards $164K in scholarships

 ASHRAE has announced the 33 students who will be receiving scholarships from the society for the 2017-18 academic year. The scholarships total $164,000.

“The ASHRAE society scholarship program was launched to both encourage and reward students who pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education and demonstrate active engagement in innovative research, which may lead us to a better world,” said Bjarne Olesen, ASHRAE’s 2017-18 president. “We are eager to support the next generation of engineers as they shape our future.”

The students are pursuing bachelor’s degrees in engineering or technology that lead to careers in the HVAC and refrigeration industry.

The five recipients of $10,000 scholarships are Elena Gowdy, who is studying architectural engineering at Pennsylvania State University; Sarah Drummey, who is studying architectural engineering at the University of Nebraska; Claire Feind, who is studying mechanical engineering at Texas A&M University; Mark Jirak, who is studying mechanical engineering at Minnesota State University; and Karan Kedia, who is studying mechanical engineering at Purdue University.

            The 15 recipients of $5,000 scholarships are:

  • Briana Basile, who is studying architectural engineering at Pennsylvania State University.
  • Justine Labrador, who is studying HVACR technology and energy management at Ferris State University.
  • Kristin O’Brien, who is studying mechanical engineering at Clemson University.
  • Brandon Hines, who is studying mechanical engineering at North Carolina State University.
  • Timothy Grider, who is studying mechanical engineering at the University of Tennessee.
  • Callie Clark, who is studying civil and environmental engineering at the University of California.
  • Karolina Czerwinski, who is studying mechanical engineering at City College of New York.
  • Mary Taylor, who is studying architectural engineering at Pennsylvania State University.
  • Michelle Ragan, who is studying architectural engineering at Kansas State University.
  • Casey Bertelsman, who is studying architectural engineering at Kansas State University.
  • Paul McNeely, who is studying mechanical engineering at North Carolina State University.
  • Justin Dean, who is studying HVACR technology at Ferris State University.
  • John Gisona, who is studying HVACR design technology at the Pennsylvania College of Technology.
  • Lakshya Garg, who is studying network engineering technology at Purdue University.
  • Tyler McCubbins, who is studying mechanical engineering at the University of Tennessee.

            The 13 recipients of $3,000 scholarships are:

•          Michael Akinseloyin, who is studying mechanical engineering at the University of Lagos.

•          Mohammad Farooq, who is studying mechanical engineering at City College of New York.

•          Keenan Baltunis, who is studying mechanical engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

•          Jordan Meyers, who is studying mechanical engineering at the University of Pittsburgh.

•          Hayden Rhymer, who is studying mechanical engineering at Tennessee Technology University.

•          Subhan Khalid, who is studying mechanical engineering at Minnesota State University.

•          Jerod Sutcliffe, who is studying mechanical engineering at the University of Hartford.

•          Jonathan Shoup, who is studying mechanical engineering at Grove City College.

•          Darin Epperson, who is studying mechanical engineering at the University of Texas.

•          Nicholas Koch, who is studying mechanical engineering technology at the University of Dayton.

•          Joshua Fox, who is studying HVACR design technology at the Pennsylvania College of Technology.

•          Thomas Guilfoil, who is studying air conditioning technology at State University of New York at Canton.

•          Esteban Garcia Ponte, who is studying engineering at Clemson University.

ASHRAE has awarded nearly $2 million of scholarship money to nearly 400 students over the last 29 years. The society is now accepting scholarship applications for the 2018-19 academic year. To apply, visit www.ashrae.org/scholarships.
