USGBC: Illinois tops 2014 'green' list

February 4, 2015

When it comes to sustainable states, Illinois leads the country, with more than 3 feet of green building-certified space per resident.

The figures come from the new list of the top 10 states for certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program administered by the U.S. Green Building Council.

This is the second year Illinois has topped the list, with 174 LEED certifications representing 3.31 square feet of space per capita. Colorado was close behind with 3.15 square feet of certified space per resident.

New additions to the list include Georgia and Arizona, reflecting growth in green HVAC and sustainable construction in the region, USGBC officials said. Maryland and Virginia also continued their strong showings, taking the No. 3 and No. 4 position on the list, respectively.

The rest of the 2014 list included:

Massachusetts

Hawaii

California

Georgia

Minnesota

Arizona

New York

Although it is officially not on the list due to its federal territory status, Washington, D.C., with a large number of federal projects, boats 29.44 square feet of green building space per resident -- the most in the country.
