‘Green' trend shows no signs of dying, experts say

January 29, 2009
Representatives from companies such as Whirlpool Corp. talked about new products that can lower energy bills while improving indoor air quality.

Energy efficient, water-conserving and otherwise “green” products are as popular ever, a panel recently told International Builders’ Show attendees.

At the Jan. 21 press conference, held during the annual National Association of Home Builders event in Las Vegas, representatives from companies such as Whirlpool Corp. talked about their new products that can lower energy bills while improving indoor air quality.

"The industry is being transformed," said the NAHB’s Research Center CEO Mike Luzier, who moderated the press conference.

Even as green home builders may be experiencing a struggling housing market, sustainable building practices become will still become the industry standard, he said.

Already, NAHBGreen, the association's green-building program, is expanding every month, officials noted.

Energy efficiency is still the most important factor for consumers, manufacturers said, but demand is also growing for water-efficient fixtures and appliances and windows and doors that contribute to improved indoor air quality, the speakers said.
