Facility with metal panels earns green certification

September 7, 2017

Petersen Aluminum Corp. supplied five different Pac-Clad roof and wall products to a 43,000-square-foot facility in New Castle, Delaware.

“We had the flexibility to select any quality metal panel manufacturer,” said Bill Holloway, a principal at Bernardon Haber Holloway Architects, who oversaw the architectural design for the project. “Our firm uses lots of metal on various projects, and most clients are fairly budget-conscious. Petersen is a manufacturer we regularly look at and was the competitive bidder.”

The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles facility is the first state-owned building to achieve silver-level certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program, officials said, which Holloway attributed in part to the panels’ arcadia green color. Approximately 34,000 square feet of Petersen’s 24-gauge Snap-Clad panels in the color were installed on the roof of the administration building.

“The color very easily met the reflectivity requirements, and that added to the ability of the building to be sustainable and meet LEED-silver standards,” Holloway said.

Salisbury, Maryland-based Apostle Construction also installed approximately 6,000 square feet of Pac-Clad 7.2 panels in arcadia green and sandstone on the walls of the facility’s inspection wing, plus a limited amount of Petersen’s Precision Series wall panels, corrugated panels and flush panels, all finished in bone white.

“I think we’ve pretty much used all of the profiles Petersen offers,” said Robert Brooks, project manager at Apostle Construction, who custom-fabricated most of the trim on-site. “We had excellent coordination on this project with the architect and with Petersen. That’s really the key to getting the job done right and on time.”

The finished project has also earned rave reviews from the facility’s employees.

“It’s a state-of-the-art facility. Not only was it designed to be certified LEED silver, but it’s going to save us operating dollars in the future,” said Jennifer Cohan, director of the Delaware DMV. “The most important thing is providing quick and efficient service. Our employees in New Castle love their new home, and we’re hoping the citizens of Delaware like it, as well.”
