Emerson Climate Technologies Inc. has announced its entrance into the European refrigerated trailer market segment through collaboration with Carrier Transicold, a unit of Carrier Corp.

Emerson’s Copeland Scroll compressor is part of the new Vector™ 1550 trailer refrigeration unit by Carrier. According to Carrier, the energy efficiency of the unit is achieved by a combination of the Copeland compressor with an economizer, enabling the use of a 1.5-liter diesel engine. The economizer function supplies up to a 40 percent increase in refrigeration capacity during pull-down, which is automatically reduced during the temperature regulation phase, according to the company.

“Customers will benefit from the Vector 1550 unit’s consistency of temperature, with optimized energy consumption for long-haul transport applications and temperature accuracy for distribution applications,” said Bertrand Gueguen, managing director, Carrier Transicold Europe. “The versatility of the Vector 1550 in transporting a variety of perishable and temperature-sensitive goods makes it the perfect fit for a wide range of logistical applications.”

According to an announcement from Emerson, the technology is “building from success in the marine container market segment where the company has shipped more than 150,000 compressors. Emerson has optimized its Copeland Scroll compressor to meet the demanding environmental requirements of a refrigerated trailer application, including external temperature variations, humidity, and shock vibration.”

COMPRESSOR ELECTRONICS

In a refrigeration-related announcement also made near the beginning of the year, Emerson said it had launched Copeland Discus® compressor with CoreSense™ Protection, an advancement to its semi-hermetic compressor line that uses the compressor as a sensor to monitor operating conditions within the compressor.  Building on its compressor electronics strategy, Emerson now integrates CoreSense technology across the Copeland Discus compressor line up to six-cylinder capacity.

According to the company, by using the Copeland Discus compressor as a sensor, CoreSense Protection monitors and interprets system and electrical information within the compressor, shutting it down before damage occurs. Copeland Discus with CoreSense Protection alerts technicians to the most serious faults first so they can accurately and rapidly correct problems and prevent compressor failures that could suddenly generate product spoilage, the company said.

“Somewhere between 20 and 40 percent of our food is wasted before it reaches the family dinner table. Much of that waste hits supermarket, convenience store, and other foodservice retail operators, who have a significant investment in refrigeration equipment and perishable inventory. They need assurance that their equipment will be reliable,” said Jason Prenger, marketing manager, food retail and industrial refrigeration, Emerson Climate Technologies, Refrigeration Division.

According to the company, “Sophisticated algorithms and capabilities, such as fault history and LED indicators, allow technicians to diagnose the past and present state of the system for rapid, accurate troubleshooting and increased uptime. When CoreSense Protection senses a fault that the compressor is running in an unsustainable condition, it responds by shutting down the compressor to avoid imminent damage. Based on fault severity, the compressor will either reset itself when the condition is cleared or require a technician to troubleshoot the fault before restarting. Its communication capability also makes it possible to retrieve information and take action remotely, such as resetting and compressor proofing.”
