Shipments Down in January

ARLINGTON, Va. - According to the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), January’s heating and cooling equipment shipment data showed decreases across each of its measurable sectors.

The combined U.S. factory shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps for January totaled 222,419, down 32 percent compared with the same month a year ago. Heat pump shipments totaled 91,360, down 29 percent from the same month a year ago.

It was noted in the report that the January 2008 combined monthly shipment total was revised to 326,681 and the heat pump shipments totals for that same month also were revised to 128,277.

Gas-fired, warm-air furnace shipments in January totaled 134,370, a 22 percent drop compared with the same month a year ago. Oil-fired, warm-air furnaces for the same month totaled 3,316; a 43 percent drop compared with January 2008 totals.
