ARLINGTON, VA — According to the Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Institute (ARI), combined U.S. factory shipments of 410,520 central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps for September were down 5% compared to shipments from the same month last year.

Heat pump shipments of 107,255 were up 12% compared to September 2000, and year-to-date unitary shipments are down 7% compared to last year.

Other a/c statistics for the month include:

September 2001 factory stocks were down 19,502 units from August 2001 and down 104,794 units from September 2000.

September 2001 distributor inventories were down 44,723 units from August 2001 and down 94,874 units from September 2000.

September 2001 distributor shipments were down 12% from September 2000 and year-to-date shipments are down 5%.
