Sept. 7, 2005: EPA Recognizes Green Building Engineer Program

ATLANTA - The Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) has announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is now recognizing the AEE's certified Green Building Engineer (GBEâ„¢) program.

According to Robert Sauchelli, national program manager, Energy Star Service and Product Provider Program, "The establishment of the GBE will make it easier to identify individuals with acceptable knowledge of the principles and practices of energy efficiency and improved building energy performance. The Green Building Engineer certification, which requires professional engineers to have energy management certification, will be an important resource for building owners looking to validate their Statement of Energy Performance, to apply for the Energy Star label.

"The Statement of Energy Performance is a stand-alone document designed to communicate not only a building's energy performance, but also its physical characteristics, operating characteristics, and conformance to current indoor environmental standards. Once validated, the Statement of Energy Performance becomes an official document that can be used in transactions. EPA is happy to promote the GBE as resource to meet this requirement."

The certified GBE program has the following objectives:

  • To raise the professional standards of those engaged in green building engineering, design, and construction.

  • To improve the practice of green building engineering by encouraging professionals in a continuing program of professional development.

  • To identify persons with acceptable knowledge of the principles and practices of green building engineering related disciplines and laws governing and affecting professionals by meeting prescribed standards of performance and conduct.

  • To award special recognition to those Green Building Engineers who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness for green building engineering, design, and construction.
