York and Delphi began to work together when United States government regulations required energy efficiency ratings to increase from 10 SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) to 13 SEER for the residential air conditioning market.
"Delphi's microchannel brazed condenser has provided alternatives to York's traditional tube and fin designs, helping them achieve their efficiency and performance goals in a smaller package," said Ray Johnson, thermal solutions business line executive, Delphi Thermal & Interior.
According to the company, the collaboration of the Delphi and York engineering staffs has resulted in a lighter and more compact cooling unit, giving York more heat exchange capacity in a significantly smaller package than what would have been possible using tube and fin heat exchanger designs. As a result, this has allowed York to design products that meet the 13 SEER requirement without increasing the size of the condensing unit, maintaining the same size package when compared to a 10 or 12 SEER unit, says the company.
"We are continuing to see our thermal knowledge, honed over almost 100 years in the automotive sector, create a strong value proposition for other customer market segments," said Ronald Pirtle, president, Delphi Thermal & Interior, vice president, Delphi Corp. "Our systems and components expertise, when aligned with York's well established competencies, has helped introduce an exciting and competitive technology to residential cooling."
