Products That Break the Energy Star Barrier

February 6, 2012
The goal of Energy Star, which is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is to help consumers save money and protect the environment through the use of energy-efficient products. The HVAC products shown here have earned the Energy Star label by meeting strict energy efficiency guidelines, which Energy Star states will enhance the comfort of a home while saving energy.

The DSZ18 heat pump features up to 18 SEER and 9.5 HSPF energy efficiency, as well as a two-stage Copeland® UltraTech scroll compressor to improve temperature and humidity control. When controlled using the compatible ComfortNet™ communications system, the heat pump is continuously monitored to reach an ideal balance between indoor temperature and humidity. The two-speed condenser fan motor allows the outdoor fan to run more often at a lower speed, and a compact footprint, plus maintenance access through both top and side panels, provide installers options. A steel louver coil guard, baked-on powder paint coating, and rust-resistant screws add durability.

Heil
www.goheil.com

A new line of QuietComfort® 96%-plus AFUE gas furnaces feature models with stainless steel primary and secondary heat exchangers. The blower motor of the new furnaces is attached with soft-mount rubber grommets that absorb sound and vibration. QuietComfort models have insulated heat exchanger and blower compartments to muffle sound and absorb vibration noise. The units stand only 35 inches tall, and 80 MBtuh models are only 17.5 inches wide, while the 100 MBtuh models – with up to 5 tons of cooling airflow – are only 21 inches wide. The cabinet edges are hemmed to give installers safer and easier handholds for lifting the furnaces.

Nordyne
www.iqdrive.net

Rated at up to 22 SEER and 10 HSPF, the iQ Drive heat pump is almost 70 percent more efficient in cooling than a standard heat pump system, and so quiet, it’s hard to tell if it’s running, according to the company. The iQ Drive heat pump uses inverter technology to achieve high efficiency levels. The unit can modulate anywhere from 40 to 118 percent of capacity, instantly adjusting to exactly offset the demands on the home. iQ Drive heat pumps are available in 2, 3, and 4 tons and in the Maytag, Broan, Frigidaire, NuTone, Tappan, and Westinghouse brands.

Nordyne
www.heynordyne.com

The iQ Drive® modulating gas furnace creates constant, quiet comfort that’s 97 percent efficient and higher. This modulating furnace maintains very tight temperature control by adjusting its percent of firing to exactly offset the heating demands on the home. The furnace analyzes the indoor temperature every 60 seconds and adjusts its percentage of firing accordingly – from between 100 to 50 percent with the gas valve and down to 15 percent with time proportioning through the thermostat. These modulating furnaces are available in 60,000 to 120,000 Btuh capacities and in the Maytag, Broan, Frigidaire, NuTone, Tappan, and Westinghouse brands.

The Affinity™ modulating ECM gas furnace employs induced combustion, reliable hot surface ignition, and high heat transfer aluminized tubular heat exchangers to deliver up to 98 percent AFUE. The ECM circulates air for longer periods, which means fewer hot and cold spots and longer periods of air filtering, resulting in cleaner and more comfortable air. The ECM also contributes to the furnace’s quiet operation – as low as 47 dB. Comfort is further enhanced by integrated controls that provide temperatures within ½ degree of the thermostat setpoint, ensuring precise modulation of the gas valve, from 35 to 100 percent in 100 increments.
