Obituary: Glenn Wesley Hannegan
He was born Sept. 8, 1932, in Watonga, Okla., to Glenn W. and Augusta (Messer) Hannegan Sr. He graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was first employed as a production manager for an air conditioning package unit manufacturer in California. He moved from Huntington Beach, Calif., to Sidney in 1971, when he joined Copeland Corp. as an application engineer. He would later bear the titles of service engineer and senior training specialist.
In 1980, he was instrumental in establishing Copeland's education program, called COSS (Compressor Operating and Service Seminar). Later he suggested that the manufacturer sponsor the RSES exam for refrigeration recovery.
Shortly after he retired from Copeland in 2000, Hannegan agreed to serve as an instructor for the society. He focused on compressors, low-temperature refrigeration, and basic refrigeration. Among his achievements, he was the 1998 winner of the Herman Goldberg Lifetime Service Award from RSES. He is remembered by friends and colleagues for his generous nature, sometimes-gruff exterior, and love of cigars - most often chomping on them but not smoking.
He is survived by his wife Ann Hannegan.
