New Green Tools Released

ATLANTA - Guidance on how to use American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standards and other technical information to achieve sustainable design was available at GreenBuild, Nov. 15-17, Colorado Convention Center, Denver.

"ASHRAE has the technology to provide efficient, safe, and healthy built environments - the primary requirements to having a sustainable facility," said Terry Townsend, P.E., ASHRAE president.

Sustainability efforts that were highlighted include:

  • A new eLearning program on ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. This online, on-demand course focuses on energy efficiency in buildings.

  • New ASHRAE publications related to sustainable design.

  • The ASHRAE Green Room is a resource room spotlighting ASHRAE's new sustainability DVD, which focuses on the society's commitment to sustainability and green building environments.

  • Another highlight of the Green Room is "The Doctor is In." Bruce Hunn, Ph.D., ASHRAE's director of technology, was on hand to answer technical questions on how to apply ASHRAE technical information to building design and to address how to apply the Standard 90.1 so that LEED credits can be achieved. Also on hand were Sheila Hayter, P.E., a senior engineer at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Golden, Colo., and a member of ASHRAE's board of directors, and Tom Meyer, an ASHRAE member.

Green measures were also taken by ASHRAE in regard to its booth including handing out undated materials that can be used at future events; using carpet that is fully recyclable; shipping its materials in bulk to decrease multiple deliveries; reusing the booth display at future events; providing bins for recycling; and in-booth snacks and traffic items that are not prepackaged, thus reducing waste.
