ATLANTA - An updated Air-Conditioning Systems Design Manual, written to bridge the gap between engineering theory and practical application, is now available from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

The manual was first published in 1993 to assist entry-level engineers in the design of air conditioning systems. The update includes new materials dealing with design process, indoor air quality, and green design.

“The manual fills the void between theory and practice,” said Walter Grondzik, P.E., editor of the guide. “It bridges the gap between real-world design practices and the theoretical knowledge acquired in academic courses or textbooks. Such courses and books usually focus on theoretical calculations and procedures - the manual focuses on applications.”

Changes to the guide include the addition of information regarding:

• The various stages of the design process (conceptual design, schematic design, and design development) and the role of HVACR systems design in each stage;

• The commissioning process;

• Indoor air quality, now noted as a major design intent for HVAC systems design; and

• Green design for HVAC systems in high-performance buildings.

The book is the second in the ASHRAE Professional Series, published jointly by ASHRAE and Butterworth-Heinemann/Elsevier.
