Jan. 24, 2005: SMACNA Publishes New Edition Of Rectangular Duct Standards

CHANTILLY, Va. - The Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association (SMACNA) has published the second edition of its Rectangular Industrial Duct Construction Standards.

According to SMACNA, the updated 446-page manual expands the scope of the 1980 version, updating the original text to incorporate a revised theory of design, new materials, and more "user friendly" tables.

Included are new tables for stainless steels and aluminum, plus expanded chapters on materials, welding practices, and a guide specification. It covers the simple, low or moderate temperature and pressure (or vacuum) indoor systems as well as the more complex outdoor systems that operate at moderate to high temperature and pressure (or vacuum), and are subject to higher and more complex external loading.

Also included in the book are:

  • Six different types of carbon galvanized and aluminized steels, seven different types of stainless steel alloys, and three different types of aluminum alloys;

  • Consideration of wind, snow, ice, and maintenance loads;

  • Design check for localized and global modes of side panel buckling;

  • Design capability for high temperature systems up to 800 degrees F and higher with design review by a specialized professional;

  • New chapter of practical examples with step-by-step instructions;

  • Expanded data for the selection of duct supports, fasteners, gaskets, and joint sealants;

  • Accepted industry practice for rectangular industrial ducts;

  • New chapter on welding; and

  • New guide specification for the fabrication and installation of industrial duct systems.

    The list price is $295 for the book, $354 for the CD-ROM, and $295 for the PDF download. To order, call SMACNA's Publications Department at 703-803-2989 or visit www.smacna.org/bookstore/.
