WASHINGTON, DC — Due to the increase in fraud that has been seen on the Internet, the federal government has initiated the new Internet Fraud Complaint Center to combat these crimes.

Attorney General Janet Reno announced that the complaint center will be run by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center.

If you believe you’ve been the victim of Internet fraud, you can contact the center on the web at www.ifccfbi.gov.

The complaint center will not handle computer virus problems, but will focus on the misrepresentations of con artists on the Net, according to the announcement.

Last year, the Federal Trade Commission fielded about 18,000 complaints relating to Internet fraud, including such things as online auctions and computer hardware/software sales.
