Company Satisfies Compressor Aftermarket

By Peter Powell
April 2, 2003
The newest compressor technology usually gets the most attention. But remember this: Once a compressor is installed in a system, any further contact with the equipment becomes part of the retrofit or aftermarket sector of the industry.

With that in mind, CMP Corp., Oklahoma City, focuses its attention on such items as crankshafts, pistons, rods, rings, and bearings. Those items may not have had the razzle-dazzle of glittery, high-tech compressors, but they are important to a contractor’s bottom line and to a technician’s ability to do a job.

In an effort to meet the growing needs of customers, CMP has introduced several new parts to its existing product line.

CMP's CKS-0835 large crankshaft and compressor body.

Custom Crankshafts

CMP has added custom crankshafts through the acquisition of a twin-head machine that custom grinds crankshafts for most small engines.

“We decided to enter the crankshaft business the way we make most decisions — based on the need we found in the market,” said general manager Ben Harrison. “Our customers were having problems getting quality crankshafts quickly, at a competitive price, because there were so few companies manufacturing them.”

The twin-head machine grinds two surfaces at once. Crankshafts up to about 2 feet in length can be ground for a wide range of applications, including engines outside the HVACR industry.

“Right now we are able to grind and deliver relatively small lots from about 50 to 200 crankshafts,” Harrison said. “But we are capable of increasing our capacity as the demand grows.”

In addition to the custom crankshafts, CMP now manufactures a compressor body and large-style crankshaft for Thermo King X430LS compressors. The crankshaft will be included in upgrade kits that convert the X430 compressor to an X430LS.

Expansion efforts also include a York parts line including Z Model compressors, in addition to the currently available pistons, rods, rings, and bearings.

Needs In The Market

Established in 1966, CMP was created to fill a gap in the replacement parts marketplace, according to company officials. They said the company now maintains the industry’s largest inventory of compressor replacement parts.

The company also negotiates with worldwide carriers to ship parts internationally, at prices said to be often lower than those in the destination country. Recently, CMP received ISO 9001 Quality System Certification.

The product line includes pistons, rods, valve plate assemblies, bearings, crankshafts, liners, oil pumps, piston rings, seal assemblies, springs, valves, and gaskets.

Among compressor lines it deals with are Carrier, Carrier Transicold, Copeland, DWM Copeland, Trane, Chrysler/Airtemp, Thermo King, York, Worthington, Refcomp, Fedders, and others.
