Carrier Sponsors Green Forum

November 29, 2010

FARMINGTON, Conn. - Carrier Corp. served as the presenting sponsor for the International Forum at Greenbuild 2010. More than 500 building professionals from around the world gathered at the event to exchange ideas and learn about the latest green building strategies.

In his keynote remarks, Carrier Corp. President Geraud Darnis said, “The green building revolution is here, and together we can change the world, building by building.” Carrier helped establish the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 1993 and was the first company to join the organization. It is also a founding member of the India, Argentina, China, and Singapore Green Building Councils.

“We learned that market transformation is not easy, and that you have to stick with it. However, technologies are available today to advance green buildings in any corner of the world,” Darnis said.

The Fourth Annual International Forum by the USGBC included a full day of breakout sessions addressing topics on eco-districts, global policy, greening in China, climate change adaptation, and active and sustainable design. In addition to this expanded program, the forum opened with an interview-style plenary session on sustainable architecture in Latin America featuring architects from Mexico, Brazil, and Chile. The full-day event closed with a panel with developers from China, Australia, and the United States, and focused on policy and implementation developments in the U.S. and abroad.

At Greenbuild, Carrier also announced the Carrier University Institute for Sustainability. Under a collaborative initiative with the USGBC, the company will license USGBC’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) curriculum to train its employees and customers in sustainable building solutions.

Carrier also launched its CO2nservation Meter to demonstrate the positive impact of choosing sustainable products. The meter (which can be found at the company’s new sustainability microsite at www.carrier.com/green), calculates avoided greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as a result of the installation of high-efficiency air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration systems by customers around the world since 2000. The model compares the projected GHG emissions from select products to emissions from comparable baseline products, with the difference representing the avoided emissions. As of Nov. 16, the meter showed Carrier customers have avoided 70,087,194 metric tons of GHG emissions, equivalent to the electricity use of 8.5 million U.S. homes for one year.
