ASHRAE To Host Building Security Broadcast

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) is sponsoring a satellite broadcast "Homeland Security for Buildings" noon to 3 p.m. on April 14.

The broadcast will focus on protecting buildings from chemical, biological, and radiological (CBR) incidents and will draw on related ASHRAE reports and publications. According to ASHRAE, it is intended for numerous professionals, such as engineers, architects, building owners and managers, contractors, firefighters, and police officers.

Dr. Donald A. Henderson, former director of the Office of Public Health Emergency Preparedness and the founding director of the Center for Civilian Biodefense Studies at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, is the keynote speaker. His speech is on "The Threat to Building Occupants." Other topics in the broadcast will include homeland security issues related to design and operation of HVACR systems in existing and new buildings; designing and operating ventilation and pressurization systems for the protection of building occupants; and the design, operation and maintenance of filtration systems and application in refuge areas.

The broadcast can be viewed by visiting downlink sites. Presenters can be asked questions via telephone, fax, or e-mail. ASHRAE is presenting this broadcast as a public service at no cost to downlink sites.

DVDs of the broadcast will be available for purchase from ASHRAE after the broadcast.
