ASHRAE Fellow Joins Counterterrorism Panel
Lawrence Spielvogel, P.E., a consulting engineer in King of Prussia, PA, will serve on the “Science and Technology for Countering Terrorism: Panel on Energy Facilities, Cities and Fixed Infrastructure.” He is the only hvac engineer on the panel.
The panel is one of several operating under the Academy’s Committee on Science and Technology for Countering Terrorism. Panelists will identify current concepts and opportunities for research that will reduce the nation’s vulnerability to terrorism directed at energy facilities, buildings, and other essential, fixed infrastructure elements. A report from the panel will be issued in fall 2002.
“This is the most unique, complex, and challenging assignment that engineers face today,” said Spielvogel. “A multidisciplinary approach will be required. It also requires understanding the conditions that exist in the many and varied existing buildings, infrastructures, and facilities.”
Spielvogel is chair of the project committee for ASHRAE Standard 90.1, “Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings.”
