Forane® 427A is a 100 percent HFC blend. According to the manufacturer, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notified the company that it intends to grant the company’s Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) petition to the commercial refrigerant to be used in a broad array of refrigeration systems as a retrofit for HCFC-22. It offers a similar performance to R-22 usually without any modification to the installation. The refrigerant can be used to retrofit low-temperature refrigeration equipment as well as air conditioning installations. It is nontoxic and nonflammable, meeting the highest A1/A1 requirement on both counts. It is compatible with polyolester (POE) lubricants. The refrigerant is unusually tolerant of high levels of residual AB or mineral oil, up to 10 percent or sometimes even 15 percent oil remaining after the change from R-22.
