SEATTLE — Seattle Refrigeration Co. and the Seattle Chapter of the Refrigeration Engineers and Technicians Association (RETA), in conjunction with the Ammonia Safety and Training Institute (ASTI), are offering an NH3 (ammonia) safety class for their inaugural Ammonia Safety and Awareness Day.

The conference is scheduled for June 5, 2009, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the Rivers Edge Best Western in Tukwila, Wash. The daylong program is intended to provide end-users, emergency responders, and regulatory officials the opportunity to learn about the hazards of ammonia, how to reduce the chances of an ammonia release, and how to respond in the event of a release.

The event features Gary Smith, president and co-founder of the Ammonia Safety and Training Institute, as the keynote speaker and facilitator. Smith, a retired fire chief from the Apstos/La Selva Fire Department with over 30 years experience in emergency response, HAZMAT, and ammonia-related incidents, co-founded ASTI in 1991 after recognizing the longstanding need for training regarding the safe handling of ammonia.

For more information, including how to register for the conference, visit www.seattlerefrigeration.com/ammonia-safety.php.
