Coolerado air conditioners chosen for Utah healthcare system

Industry News
October 15, 2013

Utah’s Intermountain Healthcare has selected Coolerado’s M50 line of air conditioners for its clinics, home health, and operating room settings. The line was chosen in an effort to save on energy costs and increase environmental health.

Intermountain officials predict a full return on investment in under five years and the fact that Coolerado uses 100% fresh outside air that’s filtered before it is cooled means fewer germs, less dust, pollen, and allergens. By using Coolerado’s M50s, Intermountain will be exceeding ASHRAE’s guidance for operating rooms which prescribes changing the air out four times per hour.

“Coolerado has no competitors in the AC space, they are a great single-source direct environmental impact solution,” said Troy Jensen, corporate energy manager for Intermountain Healthcare. “With an 88% decrease in environmental impact, everyone should be re-thinking their AC solution and considering Coolerado whose Energy Efficiency Rating (EER) is around 42 versus 13 to 18 for a typical cooling solution. We take saving energy very serious here at Intermountain and we couldn’t be more pleased to partner with Coolerado to make such impacting changes.”

Intermountain is one of the largest private employers in the state of Utah with over 34,000 employees, 22 hospitals, and 185 clinics taking up over 16 million sq ft of building space. To-date, Intermountain has spent approximately $3.5 million on their energy management program and has already recouped $2 million in energy cost savings.

“It’s expensive to operate a leading healthcare facility 24 by 7 and as a non-profit every one dollar of energy savings equates to saving $20 overall for Intermountain Healthcare; that’s a huge impact.” said Jensen.

Coolerado’s technology is based on Dr. Valeriy Maisotsenko’s M-Cycle Indirect Evaporative Cooling. It was not until after taking the Coolerado demo trailer to their hospitals around the state, however, that Jensen realized that the small packaged Coolerado array generates the performance of an IDEC system without the need of a cooling tower or fluid cooler.

“It’s like having multiple mini cooling towers within close proximity to each application, rather than having one large centrally located cooling tower; this went from voodoo magic to the coolest thing on the planet,” he said.
