Daikin takes part in ASHRAE HQ renovation

November 11, 2008

Daikin Industries, Ltd., parent company of Daikin AC (Americas), Inc., based in Texas, donated several heating and air conditioning systems that service the entire first floor and learning center of the newly renovated ASHRAE Headquarters, located in Atlanta. Daikin also provided the funding for the first reception area, known as the Daikin Reception Area, and a vegetative roof garden, which will be named the Daikin Sustainability Garden.

Completed in July, the $7.65 million renovation includes a new learning and meeting center. The Grand Opening Ceremony was held at the newly renovated facility on October 23, 2008.

During the ceremony, several Daikin officials as well as industry leaders were present to congratulate the ASHRAE’s Headquarters Renovation Committee on their achievement in building this living laboratory to showcase throughout the world.  The living laboratory will be used for experimentation, research, and testing.  Visitors to the ASHRAE Headquarters can access detailed data on the operation of Daikin’s systems as well as the other equipment installed in the facility on large plasma screen mounted in the lobby.

The donation included a VRV® III Variable Refrigerant Volume Heat Recovery Systems, VRV® -S Variable Refrigerant Volume Heat Pump Systems, SkyAir Heat Pump Systems and a mixture of Daikin ducted and duct-free fan coils.  A Daikin Intelligent Touch Controller, a BACnet® gateway interface and the 24-hour online Remote Monitoring System were also specified for the installation.

The Daikin systems used to service the first floor and learning center provided a solution to increase the usable space without any costly building modifications. The non-ozone depleting potential refrigerant, individual zone control capabilities, and heat recovery technology helped the ASHRAE organization to reach their goals of building an energy efficient and sustainable headquarters.

In recognition of Daikin’s commitment to the environment, Daikin also made a financial contribution to install a vegetative green roof at the ASHRAE headquarters. On hot summer days, the surface of a traditional rooftop can be up to 90°F (50°C) warmer than a vegetated rooftop  Daikin’s investment will protect the underlying roof material from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation and extreme daily temperatures. This will result in lowering the amount of energy needed to heat and cool the building thus reducing the ASHRAE building’s carbon footprint and CO2 emissions.
