CEO Mark Kuntz: 'We’ve seen sustainability continue to be a central demand'

The CEO of Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US shares his outlook for the industry in the new year.

The HVAC industry is in an incredibly promising and exciting position moving into 2020. Our recent technological advancements and innovations are primed to provide solutions to challenges which are receiving more mainstream recognition.

Over the past year, we’ve seen sustainability continue to be a central demand driver for electric-powered, energy-efficient technologies capable of reducing source energy and fossil-fuel emissions.

For example, in the Northeast a trend is gathering speed towards the elimination of new natural gas hook-ups while providing monetary incentives for the installation of or conversion to high-efficiency heat pumps. METUS continues to demonstrate how innovative heat pumps can replace fuel-burning heating systems.

Today’s variable-capacity heat pumps and heat-recovery systems provide consistent comfort even in sub-freezing climates. This fact concerning the cold-climate performance of VRF technology and residential heat pumps is key to understanding how we can make decarbonization and strategic electrification feasible for cities and communities across the nation.

At the same time, the number of certified or equivalent high-performance buildings (e.g., Zero Energy Ready, EarthCraft, Passive House, LEED) put in place or under construction continues to skyrocket.

The year-over-year growth rate is expected to be 60 percent or higher for high performance homes.

Looking ahead to 2020, we will continue to embrace new opportunities to innovate, improve and ultimately reduce the impact our systems have on the environment around us.
