AGC issues study on construction fatalities
A study from the Associated General Contractors of America aims to dispel some myths about worksite safety while encouraging practices that it says will protect employees.
For example, the common belief that most accidents occur in the morning is wrong, according to the study. Noon is actually the most deadly hour for accidents. And Hispanic workers are no more likely to be the victims of fatal construction accidents than anyone else.
“We all share a common goal: getting to zero construction fatalities," said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association's CEO. "This report offers the kind of data and recommendations needed to help construction firms achieve that goal."
For three years, the AGC worked with the Myers-Lawson School of Construction at Virginia Tech University to examine every construction industry death.
Sandherr said the association was sending the report to all members, as well as other construction groups and posting it online.
"No wisdom or insight should be proprietary when it comes to the safety of construction workers," Sandherr said.
