ASHRAE updates hospital design manual
ASHRAE just published an updated manual for dealing with the unique HVAC needs of hospitals and their patients, who are at risk of disease and injury from fires and accidents.
The second edition of “HVAC Design Manual for Hospitals and Clinics” includes in-depth design recommendations for mechanical engineers, contractors, maintenance staff and others who deal with HVAC systems regularly.
“The manual presents a unified and comprehensive summary of engineering background on the standard, how to meet it and alternatives for best engineering practices beyond the minimum requirements,” said Daniel Koenigshofer, P.E., editor of the manual. “A principle objective of the manual is to present what is different about designing HVAC systems for hospitals and health care facilities.”
The book, which includes a chapter on controlling infectious diseases and how that impacts system design, has been completely rewritten since the first version was published in 2003. The manual costs $99 for members of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers, and $115 for nonmembers.
