Geothermal system to be on TV show

October 2, 2008

A geothermal HVAC system will be one of the stars of an upcoming episode of ABC-TV’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”

The Oct. 5 episode is scheduled to feature the installation of a geothermal heating and cooling system at an Ohio family’s residence.

Brian Giffin, the owner of Lebanon, Ohio, WaterFurnace dealer Geothermal Solutions worked with territory manager Terry Ferguson to coordinate the project that involved drilling six bore holes.

“The challenge we faced as a team was to design and install the complete system in just four days,” Ferguson said. “With the help of drill work that took just 14 hours, pre-built ductwork, a seamless installation, and the hard work of 15 professionals, we were able to complete the job in 106 hours.” The ductwork was made and installed by Hill Air of Fairfield, Ohio. The loop system and 6-ton WaterFurnace Envision Series unit was installed by Geothermal Solutions. WaterFurnace donated the unit and accessories.

The episode marks the first time a geothermal system has been featured on the reality-based television series, WaterFurnace officials said.

Geothermal systems use the Earth’s constant ground temperature to heat and cool buildings. They can be hundreds of times more efficient than traditional furnaces and air conditioners.

“A geothermal system is a great example of a proven green technology that deserves to be highlighted as homeowners search for energy-efficient, environmentally friendly home heating and cooling systems,” Ferguson said. “The system can actually reduce a homeowner’s utility bill by as much as 70 percent and dramatically reduce the home’s carbon footprint at the same time.”
