SMACNA president inducted into hall of fame

January 7, 2013
The Michigan Construction Hall of Fame has inducted former SMACNA President Richard J. Cramer Sr. of Holly, Mich.

The hall is located at Ferris State University’s Granger Center for Construction and HVACR in Big Rapids, Mich. He was honored for his pioneering uses of technology and leadership in the sheet metal, HVAC and construction industries.

Taking over his father’s $3.5 million heating company in the late 1970s, Cramer used strategic planning and lean construction techniques to elevate the firm, Dee Cramer Inc., to a $28 million enterprise. In 2011, the firm reached $44 million in sales.

According to hall officials, Cramer also pioneered 3-D coordination and building information modeling helping to build the nation’s first “virtual” projects at two General Motors facilities. The technologically advanced work done by Dee Cramer on these jobs saved GM significant time and money, they said.

Cramer served as national president of the Sheet Metal and Air-Conditioning Contractors’ National Association from 2006 to 2007. He also served two non-consecutive, four-year terms on the association’s board of directors. Inducted into SMACNA’s College of Fellows in 1994, Cramer’s industry involvement spans 40 years, serving on more than 35 national committees and task forces.
