Ingersoll Rand reduces carbon footprint, greenhouse gas emissions

IndustryNews
May 10, 2017

Ingersoll Rand recently shared progress on its global Climate Commitment, a pledge to reduce environmental impacts from its operations and product portfolio.

Ingersoll Rand said its Climate Commitment has enabled the avoidance of 6.7 million metric tons of CO2e globally from its products compared to a 2013 baseline, equal to the emissions from the energy used in 700,000 homes for one year. The company has also reduced the greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity of its operations by 23% when compared to a 2013 baseline. With this milestone, the company is on track to achieve its goals to reduce its carbon footprint by 50 million metric tons by 2030 and to incorporate refrigerant alternatives with lower-global warming potential (GWP) across the company’s product portfolio by 2030.

“Linking our strategy and business opportunities to important global trends like climate change creates long-term value for our people, customers, and the world,” said Michael W. Lamach, chairman and CEO of Ingersoll Rand. “Sustainability in all its forms — business, social, and environmental — is what we do. Strong progress on our Climate Commitment signals to employees, customers, and shareholders we are prepared to meet today’s demand for responsible business practices and products. Transparency around our goal demonstrates we are succeeding and further differentiates our industry leadership.”

In 2016, the company added four new products to the EcoWise™ portfolio of products, including Thermo King truck and trailer refrigerant units; Trane Sintesis™ air-cooled chillers; Trane CenTraVac™ centrifugal chillers; and the Trane Series R™ RTWD water-cooled chiller. With the addition of the Trane products to the EcoWise portfolio, the company is close to having its entire commercial HVAC chiller portfolio available with next-generation refrigerants. Launched in 2015, EcoWise is a portfolio of products designed to lower environmental impact with next-generation, low-global warming potential refrigerants and high-efficiency operation.

“All of these efforts further advance Ingersoll Rand’s progress towards creating more sustainable product choices for customers, improving the company’s operating footprint globally, and contributing to the development of lower GHG technologies,” said W. Scott Tew, executive director of the Center for Energy Efficiency and Sustainability at Ingersoll Rand.

Ingersoll Rand made a Climate Commitment to reduce GHG emissions from its products and operations by 2030. The Ingersoll Rand Climate Commitment pledges to:

• Cut the GHG refrigerant footprint of its products by 50% by 2020 and incorporate lower-GWP alternatives across its portfolio by 2030

• Invest $500 million in product-related research and development by 2020 to fund the long-term reduction of GHG emissions

• Reduce company operations-related GHG emissions by 35% by 2020.
