Proposed energy bill recognizes third-party HVACR certification

Industry News
March 19, 2014

The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute is applauding the introduction of H.R.4219, which would amend the Energy Policy and Conservation Act. The change would provide for the recognition of voluntary certification programs for air conditioning, furnace, boiler, heat pump, and water heating products.

The bill is sponsored by Representative Robert Latta (R-Ohio), and cosponsored by Representatives Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Jim Matheson (D-Utah).

“AHRI applauds the leadership of Representatives Latta, Blackburn, and Matheson on a bill that will save taxpayer dollars by avoiding duplicative programs,” said Stephen Yurek, president and CEO of AHRI.

H.R. 4219 would require DOE to recognize third-party certification programs, such as AHRI’s, to verify the performance of federally covered HVACR and water heating products. In return, recognized certification bodies would provide annual reports to the department.

“We are grateful to the representatives and their staff for their hard work and dedication to this bill, and for their willingness to help us find common ground on issues of importance to our industry,” said Yurek.
