The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (www.ashrae.org) has denied all appeals filed against publication of its revised energy conservation standard for new buildings. The decision about appeals concerning 90.1-1999, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, was made by the group’s Board of Directors at a Oct. 29 meeting.

Four sets of appeals were filed after the standard was approved for publication. Those appeals included objections to the proposed standard’s building envelope and water heater efficiency sections. Other appeals suggested the standard does not incorporate advanced unit power density levels for lighting, and that rules for demonstrating compliance with the standard using the whole building method were weakened. Also appealed were ASHRAE’s efforts to ensure due process and consensus-building leading to the decision to publish the standard.

At that same October meeting, ASHRAE voted to put ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1-1999 on continuous maintenance, whereby it will be updated continuously through addenda.
