It was refrigeration equipment for the foodservice industry that served up The NEWS’ sixth annual Dealer Design Awards’ Refrigeration & Ice Machines category winners. Two manufacturers found victory in an ice machine and an outdoor condensing unit. Hoshizaki America Inc. repeated its gold conquest with the Self Contained Cubelet ice machine with built-in storage C-100BAE-AD. Emerson Climate Technologies’ Copeland Scroll® outdoor condensing unit for foodservice walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer applications earned the silver award highlighting its easy maneuverability and Copeland PerformanceAlert™ diagnostics.
Using a small auger driven device to deliver up to 100 pounds of cubelet ice per day to a residence, a commercial office/lodging, or small entertainment establishment, minimum tools are required to install the machine with three simple connections - one water supply connection, one drain connection, and a power cord.
The unit is self-contained and has a narrow depth. It does not require any heavy lifting when installing or performing routine maintenance.
Troubleshooting is easy due to the simple controls and operation designed into the machine, said the company. The unit does not have a control board in the box, so the sequence of operation is uncomplicated for the contractor to diagnosis. When servicing the unit, there is no need for the contractor to re-grease the graphite bearings. These bearings also do not contaminate the ice with grease.
To access the C-100 for cleaning, the contractor has to remove the plastic panels inside the bin with two thumbscrews.
One judge said that even though the under-counter ice machine concept was not a new one, “I think Hoshizaki has added some rethinking to this unit. The panels that come off without removing six screws alone will save time.”
Another judge admired this “niche product that will serve consumers well.”
The unit’s exterior is constructed of stainless steel and has fewer moving parts than larger cubelet machines. A drain pump can be inserted into a pre-defined space in the machine for applications without floor drains.
This high-efficiency condensing unit was designed to offer optimum flexibility, allowing for improved installation and increased installation location options. Its lighter weight, ease of maneuverability, and vertical orientation also makes it easier for contractors to install and service. For rooftop installations, the lighter weight and maneuverability can potentially allow contractors to avoid the costs of using a crane and/or avoid roof structural analysis for retrofits or new installation locations. In addition, these units permit wall-mounting installation options, ideal for urban locations where roof access and long refrigerant runs would normally be economically prohibited or physically challenged.
With PerformanceAlert diagnostics embedded in the control board, the unit also offers diagnostic protection capabilities for the entire system. The fault history feature permits more accurate trouble-shooting for contractors and offers additional education for technicians.
One of the contractor judges was intrigued by the fault storage codes. “This unit’s flexibility will allow for easier installation and the fault code storage capabilities will be well received by the service technicians,” he said.
The unit offers contractors a high efficiency, flexible product with enhanced diagnostic capabilities that will provide their end users with lower energy bills and maintenance costs, increased reliability, and improved installation and location options.
