The state of New Hampshire is taking on regulation of power plant emissions. The state’s multiple pollutant reduction program is one of the first in the country to include carbon dioxide emissions.
The new program caps emissions at current levels and provides for a system of emissions credits that can be traded among power companies. It requires the state’s Department of Environmental Services to establish a strategy to reduce emissions, including using energy efficiency and renewable energy. The program also looks to reducing the carbon emissions cap by 2010.
