March 12, 2014: Army Awards 20 Contracts for Renewable Energy
The Base Contracts Enable Third-Party-Financed Renewable Energy Projects
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced the award of 20 base contracts to companies for renewable energy-related technologies. The contracts, including 15 for solar energy, three for wind energy, and two for biomass energy, are part of a $7 billion large-scale renewable and alternative energy power production contract.
The base contracts enable third-party-financed renewable energy projects to be developed by the approved companies, and involve no Army or Department of Defense (DOD) capital or military construction appropriations. The Army or DOD will purchase the power from contractors who own, operate, and maintain the renewable energy generating facilities that move forward. The new contracts will support the Army in meeting its congressionally mandated energy goal of 25 percent production of energy from renewable sources by 2025, improving the energy security and sustainability of Army installations.
