The town of Bloomington, Iowa, was incorporated in 1839 as the county seat, and the first courthouse was built in 1840 for $15,000. The town’s name was changed to Muscatine (from the Mascoutin Indians) nine years later. The third courthouse, the current one, which was designed in the Beaux Arts style, was constructed in 1907, and in 1981 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
